Departure service: closing a Swiss life in an orderly way

A leaving Switzerland relocation service closes the Swiss side of an assignment: commune, insurance, housing, household goods. This page sets out scope, limits and the questions to ask.

A leaving Switzerland relocation service handles the end of an assignment or a permanent move out. It is the mirror image of the arrival phase. The employer's aim is a clean exit: no open tenancy, no unpaid insurance, no unresolved registration, no stranded household goods.

This page is written for the HR or mobility manager. It explains what the service covers, what can be done in-house, and how the introduction to a specialist firm works.

What a departure involves

Departure is not one task. It is a set of separate obligations, each with its own counterparty. Some sit with the employer, some with the transferee, and some with Swiss authorities that act differently from one commune or canton to the next.

The usual workstreams are:

  • notice to the commune of residence (Gemeinde) and the cantonal migration office;
  • the residence or work permit, which ends with the move out;
  • basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) and supplementary cover;
  • the tenancy, including notice periods, the handover inspection and the rent deposit (Mietzinsdepot);
  • household goods: packing, export formalities, storage or disposal;
  • utilities, telecoms, bank accounts and local subscriptions;
  • schools and childcare, when the family leaves with the employee;
  • tax and social security closing, handled by the payroll and tax advisers already on the file.

The two regimes that shaped the arrival still matter. Swiss rules distinguish EU/EFTA nationals (free movement route) from third-country nationals. The permit position affects how the exit is documented and what the destination country will ask for later. The detail is set by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), and the regime depends on the nationality of the employee.

The frise: a departure in order

The sequence below shows the logic of a managed departure. Dates are set by the contract, the lease and the authorities, not by this page.

What the employer can do alone

Many exits are handled internally, particularly for a single transferee with a simple tenancy. Typical in-house tasks are the exit letter, the policy sign-off, payroll closing and the travel booking. A mobility team with a good checklist can cover these without outside help. The relocation calendar and the personalised checklist generator give a structure to work from.

When outside help makes sense

A specialist firm adds value where local practice decides the outcome:

  • a tenancy with a strict handover inspection and a disputed cleaning standard;
  • a family with children in school and a departure in mid-year;
  • a group move with several transferees leaving in the same month;
  • a lump-sum policy where the employee organises the exit and the employer wants a controlled end state;
  • a case where the permit situation is unusual and the authorities need a clear file.

Rules differ by commune. At arrival, for example, the announcement to the commune is made within 14 days, with identity document, permit and proof of health insurance (ch.ch). The departure announcement is a separate procedure, and its timing and documents vary by commune. The departure rules are not set out here. The commune or a specialist confirms them for the case at hand.

Health insurance follows domicile. Basic cover is compulsory for anyone domiciled in Switzerland, to be taken out within three months of taking up residence (FOPH). Ending that cover on departure depends on the insurer and the proof of leaving, so the notice step belongs early in the plan, not at the end.

How the introduction works

The site is a matching service. It does not carry out the departure itself.

  1. The employer sends a departure support request describing the exit date, the household size and the tasks wanted.
  2. The request is reviewed to see which kind of relocation firm fits: housing handover, goods, immigration paperwork, or a full managed exit.
  3. The employer is put in touch with a firm that matches the need.
  4. A first exchange sets the scope, the responsibilities and the timing. Terms are agreed directly with that firm.

No price is quoted here and no firm is named. A specialist examines each case on its facts.

Questions to ask a departure provider

  • Which tasks are in scope, and which stay with the employer or the employee?
  • Who attends the flat handover inspection?
  • How are notices to insurers and utilities documented?
  • What happens to goods that cannot travel, and who decides?
  • How is progress reported to HR?
  • What does the file contain at the end, and who keeps it?

Frequently asked questions

What does a leaving Switzerland relocation service cover?

It covers the practical closing of a Swiss residence: notices, handover of the home, household goods, and the paperwork with the commune. The exact scope is agreed with the provider, and tasks can be split between the provider and the employer.

Is the service the same as repatriation support?

Repatriation looks at the whole return, including the destination country. A departure service focuses on closing the Swiss side. The two often run together, and the departure and repatriation page covers the return view.

Who asks for the service, the employer or the employee?

Either route exists. Under a managed policy the employer commissions it. Under a lump sum the employee may arrange it, with the employer setting the outcome expected.

Can the employee do the departure alone?

Often yes, when the tenancy and household are simple. Outside help has more value when notice periods, inspections or a family move are involved.

Does departure affect the residence permit?

The permit ends with the move out, and the authorities are told. Procedures differ by canton, so the cantonal migration office or a specialist confirms the steps.

Are the rules different for EU/EFTA and third-country nationals?

Two regimes exist: EU/EFTA nationals under the free movement route, and third-country nationals under the general admission rules (SEM). The departure paperwork can differ accordingly, so the file should state the nationality.

When does the departure announcement to the commune happen?

It depends on the commune. The arrival announcement is made within 14 days (ch.ch), but the departure timing is not covered by that fact. The commune gives the date and the documents.

What happens to health insurance when the employee leaves?

Basic insurance is tied to domicile in Switzerland, and the obligation to take it out arises within three months of arrival (FOPH). Ending it on departure follows the insurer's terms and the proof of leaving.

Can the provider guarantee the rent deposit is returned?

No. The release of the deposit depends on the landlord, the handover record and the tenancy terms. A provider can prepare the inspection, but the outcome is not assured.

Can the service handle a group departure?

Yes, in principle. State the number of transferees, the exit dates and the tasks wanted in the request, so the right type of firm is selected.

Does the site quote prices?

No. Fees are agreed directly with the firm after the first exchange, and nothing is priced on this page.

How long does the introduction take?

The request is reviewed and a suitable firm is contacted. Timing depends on the case and the firm's availability, so no fixed duration is stated.
