Basel (Bâle, canton of Basel-Stadt, code BS) sits on the Rhine in the north-west corner of Switzerland. It is a city with a strong life-sciences identity, and many assignments there start from a pharmaceutical or research employer. For your employee, living in Basel is a very international experience from the first week.
This page is for the person who has never lived there. It covers the city, housing, the airport, the cantonal migration office and the first days. It does not cover people who live abroad and commute in. Your transferee will live in Switzerland.
What your transferee is moving into
According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), Basel had 180,097 permanent residents in 2025. Of these, 72,884 were foreign nationals, or 40.5% (FSO, STATPOP 2025). Your employee will not be the only newcomer in the building or at the school gate.
The city is compact. Many daily errands are possible on foot or by tram. The border with France and Germany is close, which shapes the airport, the shopping habits and the weekend options. It does not change the rules for your transferee, who must register as a resident in Switzerland.
Language is a point to settle early. Ask the cantonal office which language it uses for appointments and forms. Do not assume English will be available at every counter.
Housing: what the figures say
The FSO measures average net rents (excluding heating and service charges) from its structural survey. For the city of Basel, the 2022-2024 cumulated average across all sizes is CHF 1,395 per month (FSO). By size, a one-room flat averages CHF 868 (FSO), a two-room CHF 1,157 (FSO) and a three-room CHF 1,411 (FSO). A four-room flat averages CHF 1,845 (FSO) and a five-room CHF 2,362 (FSO).
These are averages of existing leases, not asking rents for a new tenant. Treat them as an order of magnitude only. For the whole canton of Basel-Stadt, the 2024 average net rent across all sizes is CHF 1,451 (FSO).
On availability, the FSO reports a vacancy rate of 0.78% for the canton on 1 June 2026 (FSO). A city-level rate is not available to us, so do not infer one. In practice, tell your employee that viewings are competitive and the application file must be ready before arrival.
A working order of steps:
- Agree the housing budget and the policy basis (lump sum or managed service) before the search starts.
- Collect the documents a Swiss landlord will ask for, such as proof of employment and an extract from the debt register once available.
- Plan temporary accommodation for the first weeks, so that the lease does not have to be signed under pressure.
- Book a handover inspection and a household liability policy for the day the keys are given.
The home search service page explains how the matching works, and the rental file checker helps your employee prepare the application.
Airport and transport
The main airport is the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (operator website). We have not verified journey times or travel passes, so confirm them with the Swiss rail operator and the local transport provider before you brief your employee.
Plan the arrival day around luggage, keys and a first night in temporary accommodation. A moving company's customs file is a separate task, covered in the guide to international removals and customs.
Schools
Families ask early about schooling. We cannot give a verified list of international schools in Basel here. Ask the canton, or the association of Swiss international schools, before you name any school to your employee. The school choice guide helps to frame the question.
Permits and the cantonal migration office
The authority in charge is the Bevölkerungsdienste und Migration (BdM) of Basel-Stadt, the cantonal migration office. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) lists it among the official cantonal authorities. Its page is on the canton's website.
The permit a transferee needs depends on nationality and on the employment contract. EU/EFTA nationals and third-country nationals follow different procedures. Third-country files usually start with the employer. The authorities decide; nobody can promise an outcome. The permit finder gives a first orientation, and an immigration specialist examines the individual file through the immigration support service.
Employees arriving from the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Germany, France, Canada, China, Japan, the Emirates or Australia often need different documents. Check the nationality-specific list early.
First days on the ground
- Register with the municipality of residence (Gemeinde) and ask what the office needs to see.
- Take out the compulsory health insurance within the period set by the authorities.
- Open a bank account once the registration papers are available.
- Check the school or childcare place for children.
The settling-in service and the relocation calendar set out the sequence. To compare Basel with other destinations, use the city comparator or read about Zürich. To start a request, see the form at the bottom of the page.
